Electric charter boats that generate more power than they use
When a fleet of electric charter boats is so energy-efficient that it generates more power than it uses, standard battery monitoring can struggle with accurate range estimations. For Bernd Rudolf, founder of Woterfitz and a member of the Victron Recommended Software Integrator Program , this was the perfect opportunity to leverage Victron’s open and customisable ecosystem to build a bespoke dashboard tailored precisely to their needs. Based in Rechlin/Müritz, Germany, Woterfitz designs and builds 9-metre electric motor boats at its own small shipyard. The vessels, known as the Voyager 900e, are offered as charter boats, as well as, upon special request from previous charter customers, custom-built boats for sale. Since their launch in 2023, the charter fleet has already grown to around 20 boats operating throughout the summer season on Lake Müritz, allowing customers to enjoy the Mecklenburg Lake District, from Lake Müritz itself to the surrounding canals, which lead all the way to Berlin and beyond. Each boat in the fleet is fully self-sufficient, with only an optional shore power connection for convenience. Victron Energy system on each boat includes: MPPT 450/100 Multiplus-II 48 V, 3kVA Cerbo GX communication centre 2.4kW of solar panels 24kWh LiFePO4 batteries The result is a vessel with remarkable range: in late September 2025, for example, Bernd covered 102km through central Berlin over 2.5 days, using only around 40% of the battery’s state of charge. The Voyager 900e is driven by an ePropulsion electric motor. At a speed of 8 km/h, the motor draws around 1.5kW. On a sunny day during the summer season, the 2.4kW solar array can comfortably power the motor as well as charging the battery bank. When Bernd was cruising through the canals at 6.3 km/h on a September afternoon, for instance, the display showed 820W of motor power being drawn, with 838W coming in from the PV array. The challenge and the solution With such an energy-efficient electric boat, an unexpected challenge emerged. When the sun is out, the 2.4kW of solar panels can propel the boat and charge the battery at the same time, so the input exceeds the output, resulting in an infinite ‘time to go’ being displayed. Even though technically correct, this is not particularly useful for a captain planning a longer journey through the canals. To tackle this challenge, Bernd and the Woterfitz team built a custom software solution running on the Cerbo GX. The Cerbo GX sits at the centre of the integration, connected to a custom mainboard that handles all the wiring between the cockpit and the rest of the vessel’s systems. On top of VenusOS, the team runs NGINX and PHP directly on the Cerbo to serve a bespoke web-based Human-Machine Interface (HMI), which is displayed on a Raymarine device in the cockpit The HMI pulls live data via MQTT and presents it in a way that is immediately relevant for the captain, displaying: Where the power comes from (batteries or solar) An efficiency bar that shifts from green to red as speed increases, giving the captain an intuitive feel for energy consumption at a glance. Beyond the display itself, the integration runs deeper. The ePropulsion motor data is integrated into the Victron system via a custom decoder. The RS485 data stream from the motor is decoded, fed into the Cerbo over HTTP, and then published onto the Victron DBus, making it available to the rest of the system alongside native Victron data. The Cerbo also handles low state-of-charge protection for the boat’s electric heating system and 48V water boiler. When the battery drops below 30% SoC, the Cerbo automatically disables both, reserving enough energy for propulsion. Looking ahead The Woterfitz team is continuing to develop the platform. A dedicated internal touch display is planned for day-to-day use. It will show key information such as SoC, time to go, and water levels, and allow the user to control the heating and other onboard systems. Rather than exposing Victron’s native interface, it will present a simplified, abstracted view appropriate for a charter guest or boat owner, covering just the things they actually need to interact with. A mobile app is also in development, giving boat owners and charter guests remote access to key information like battery state and the ability to preheat the cabin before boarding. Final remarks Woterfitz’s custom software integration is a strong example of what is possible through Victron’s open ecosystem, and the many possibilities it opens up for skilled software integrators. By using DBus to publish third-party motor data, MQTT to stream it to a custom display, and the Cerbo GX as an on-board application server, Bernd has built a fully integrated energy management and navigation aid tailored precisely to the needs of a solar-electric charter boat. Travel smarter, not harder
Living on the road, even the simplest things can become a bit of a mission. Want to do the dishes? Better check if there’s enough water. Want warm water? Are the batteries charged enough? These small, everyday things can add up. That’s when smart automations can make life on the road easier by taking a few things off your mind. Meet Dennis. He’s a part-time vanlifer, an authorised Victron installer, a recommended software integrator in our program , and the founder of Camptronics – a company that turns a regular home on wheels into a smart one. His ideas and integrations, combined with Victron’s open approach to customisation and Node-Red, open up endless possibilities. Dennis showcased his smart camper concept at Maker Faire Belgium, 2024. Dennis converted his campervan in 2022 and, during his travels, started noticing things that could be improved to make life on the road easier. “Along the way I connected with people who were going through the same process but had some shortcomings they couldn’t fix. Others didn’t even realise there were options to fix the issues they had; they thought it was just part of RVing.” With a background in systems and network engineering, it didn’t take long for Dennis to dive into the electrical side of things and start learning more about Victron systems. “What sparked my interest in the electrical side of this whole story was the robustness and ease of use of the Victron components. They are easily available as well and have a very friendly and big community. Using these components I set off with a very robust baseline to only improve upon even further.” From there, he developed an intuitive and reliable central management platform to help RVers easily manage their power systems and automate daily tasks for a more enjoyable time on the road. Smart automations for the road The Cerbo GX is at the core of the system, gathering data from the connected Victron components and third-party sensors. Thanks to its openness and customisability, it can do far more than real-time monitoring or switching relays, especially in the hands of a knowledgeable software integrator. By using the Modbus-TCP protocol, and the detailed register list available to download on our website , Dennis is able to access a deeper layer of system data. He feeds this into the logic he built in Node-RED, allowing him to create custom, in-depth automations tailored to each van. He also makes use of the Cerbo’s built-in MQTT broker, which enables reactive automations. For example, the diesel heater automatically turns on when the temperature drops below 4°C, and the inverter shuts off when not in use to save power. Let’s take a look at a few examples of what these automations can do. Location-based insights The smart control platform uses the GPS location from the Cerbo GX, local weather forecasts, and MPPT data to estimate how much solar power is likely to be available over the next two days. It takes into account sun intensity, sunrise and sunset times, cloud cover, and recent energy use to predict energy availability. If it expects the batteries to fully charge, it can automatically switch on high-consumption devices like the water boiler, making the most of surplus energy. Location data is also used for more than just solar forecasting. For example, altitude readings help adjust the diesel heater’s settings to improve combustion efficiency in high-altitude areas like the Alps. It can also be used for solo travel safety, sharing your location with friends or family, or even as a theft-prevention feature. Keeping an eye on the tanks and the pipes Fresh and grey water levels are monitored in real time, with notifications sent instantly via Telegram or SMS, so you don’t need to keep an eye on them. Some other automations include automatically disabling the pump if the fresh water tank runs low, to protect it from running dry, or automatically turning on the heater when the temperature drops below 4.5°C, to prevent frozen pipes and protect the filtration system. Smart energy management When the battery State of Charge drops below 30%, the app sends a notification if any high-wattage appliances such as the induction hob or air fryer are in use, to help prevent deep discharge. The inverter also switches off automatically when not in use, reducing unnecessary power consumption. The platform detects when the alternator is running and, if there is excess power available, redirects it to heat water or power other high-demand appliances. Vehicle data The platform also reads detailed vehicle data such as engine RPM, fuel range, oil and AdBlue levels, odometer readings, and more. “These functions are mostly used in fleets to generate eco scores of trips performed by their company drivers or people who rent out their RV to check how responsibly their vehicles are driven,” Dennis explains. One less thing to worry about It is a highly customisable tool, designed for your needs to make life on the road a little simpler. For example, if you have to leave your dog in your campervan, it is nice to know that the system monitors the indoor temperature, as well as the CO2 levels and the air quality, to then automatically enable or disable the heater or the air ventilation. What’s ahead? Dennis is currently working on adding features like seasonal profiles, so users can switch between summer, winter or off-grid settings with one tap, and a smart CCTV system that uses GPS and motion detection for extra peace of mind while parked, and doubles as a dashcam while driving. If you are looking to add smart automations to your own campervan or off-grid setup, send a message to Dennis here. He builds custom software solutions using tools like Node-RED, the VRM API, MQTT, Grafana and Home Assistant, with a focus on making everyday life on the road easier. Green Power Solutions’ 3MS Platform
Energy management isn’t always straightforward, especially when custom solutions are needed. The Victron Recommended Software Integrator Program connects companies with skilled software integrators who create custom solutions using Victron’s open ecosystem. Green Power Solutions (GPSL), a UK-based company specialising in sustainable energy solutions, recently joined the program. Their flagship product, the 3MS platform, is a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution designed to simplify the monitoring, management, and control of off-grid assets. Here’s a closer look at the platform, the challenges it addresses, and two real-world examples of its application. The 3MS Platform “The idea for 3MS emerged from Andrew Shaw’s hands-on experience with Victron systems,” explains Sam Taylor, Co-Founder and CEO of GPSL. Andrew, GPSL’s Chief Technology Officer, has years of practical experience in installing, supporting, and optimising energy systems with Victron products. “We recognised that while Victron’s VRM platform is excellent for monitoring energy performance, certain industries needed more functionality and flexibility,” she adds. To meet the unique needs of various industries, GPSL built the 3MS platform using Victron’s open ecosystem. At its core, the platform leverages the Victron Cerbo GX for collecting data and triggering alarms via digital inputs. MQTT ensures real-time updates and communication, while Modbus-to-MQTT translation enables compatibility with additional devices, such as fuel cell controllers and IoT sensors. Key features of the 3MS Platform: Integration with Victron and IoT devices: Combines data from Victron’s Cerbo GX and VRM API with sensors for enhanced insights. AI-driven chatbot: Enables users to ask natural-language questions and receive actionable insights, such as: Listing assets where consumption exceeds solar production. Predicting assets likely to go offline within a week. Highlighting low battery alarms with troubleshooting steps. Calculating diesel generator runtime and energy consumption. This feature reduces maintenance visits, increases uptime, and tracks environmental impact, such as CO₂ reductions equivalent to trees planted. Real-time monitoring and alerts: Utilises MQTT for second-by-second updates and proactive notifications. Scalability across industries: Serves construction, telecoms, security, and fleet management with tools tailored for each sector. 3MS Platform fuel cell monitoring Case study 1: Sump pump monitoring Challenge: Newton Waterproofing Systems, a UK-based company, needed real-time monitoring for their sump pump systems to prevent water ingress. Traditional setups lacked data accuracy and timely alerts, making maintenance planning difficult. These systems were also expensive and relied on outdated 56kbps dial-up modems, which have now been replaced with a broadband always-on connection. Solution: GPSL used the 3MS platform to integrate Victron’s Cerbo GX into Newton’s systems. A dynamic map interface with visual indicators simplified monitoring, while features like water volume calculations and pump runtime tracking enabled proactive maintenance. The Cerbo, equipped with Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and digital inputs, provided a reliable interface for monitoring. 3MS Platform dashboard map Key application-specific capabilities of the 3MS Platform include: Water level tracking through Cerbo GX digital inputs. Real-time condition updates via MQTT. Visual status tracking on a map interface for all pump locations. The outcome? Reduced downtime, improved maintenance scheduling, and enhanced system reliability. 3MS Platform sump pump monitoring Case study 2: 100% uptime for off-grid CCTV towers Challenge: Off-grid security towers required a reliable energy supply, particularly during winter when solar production was low. Conventional systems struggled to maintain uptime in these conditions, leading to operational challenges. Solution: Using the 3MS platform, GPSL optimised energy use by: Monitoring battery levels and solar input via Victron’s Cerbo GX and VRM API. Offloading energy-intensive tasks, such as live stream monitoring and motion detection, to the cloud to minimise hardware load. Providing real-time alerts and insights for battery and system status. The system achieved 100% uptime for all security cameras on the shortest day of the year, with a steady increase in battery state of charge. This solution provided reliable surveillance, optimised energy usage, and reduced environmental impact. 3MS Platform shortest day graph Resources for installers and software integrators The Victron Recommeneded Software Integrator Program enables companies like GPSL to extend the capabilities of Victron systems. Valley Hi Tech’s innovative mobile medical solutions
When technology meets a drive to innovate, meaningful solutions emerge. Jesse Wagler, founder of Valley Hi Tech and a Victron Ambassador, embodies this spirit of ingenuity. Based in Columbus, Ohio, Jesse and his team design and manage alternative energy solutions for industries including RVs, aviation, agriculture, and, most notably, mobile medical solutions and automation. One of their standout projects involves transforming trailers into reliable, fully equipped mobile diagnostic units. These trailers deliver critical healthcare services to rural and underserved communities, housing advanced diagnostic tools such as MRI and CT machines. Operating these mobile units, however, presents unique challenges. The challenge Delivering life-saving diagnostic tools like MRI and CT machines to remote areas requires more than just advanced medical equipment—it demands a dependable infrastructure that works in mobile settings. Previously, these trailers offered limited monitoring with no remote control options. “These trailers need constant, reliable power, stable environments, and remote monitoring to function,” Jesse explains. “Before our integration, even simple issues like temperature changes, or serious power supply problems required sending a technician on-site, causing delays of days or even weeks.” With many clients managing hundreds of trailers across various locations, the absence of real-time monitoring often resulted in significant delays. The solution Jesse discovered Victron Energy in 2019 through YouTube: “What caught my eye was the scalability and quality of the products. They fit perfectly into our projects because they’re adaptable and can integrate with other systems.” Using Victron’s open ecosystem, Valley Hi Tech developed the VHT-2000x Series Remote Monitoring, Controls, and DC Distribution System. At its core, Victron’s Cerbo GX integrates with technologies like Mitsubishi PLCs, MQTT protocols, and Ignition IoT for the user interface. Victron Energy’s Cerbo GX and a Mitsubishi PLC manage communication between the shock and tilt sensor, third-party HVAC controls, and Victron equipment using Modbus TCP. The system also connects to a Human Machine Interface (HMI) screen. Data collected from both devices are sent to a secure web application using two mobile data connections (LTE). This allows users to check and control everything remotely, from anywhere in the world. The solution required six months of development, resulting in a comprehensive interface and a reliable backend for monitoring and control. Key features of the VHT-2000x: Real-time updates: Tracks critical data such as power supply, temperatures, and trailer conditions, transmitting information to a secure cloud server. Automated controls: Automated alarms and equipment like generators and air conditioners, customised to client specifications. Integration: Combines Victron’s Cerbo GX with Mitsubishi PLCs and CAN/Modbus for power management and environmental monitoring. Shock protection: Custom sensors measure movement during transport, safeguarding sensitive medical devices. Power monitoring: Monitors the power supplied to the medical units and other critical equipment to ensure reliable operation. Also powers and monitors auxiliary systems such as trailer legs and patient lifts. Environmental monitoring: Continuously tracks temperature, battery conditions, and HVAC systems, with alarms for out-of-range parameters. User-friendly UI: Developed with Ignition IoT, the system provides a centralised dashboard for easy access and monitoring. The result By leveraging Victron’s open ecosystem, Valley Hi Tech has transformed mobile medical operations. Hospitals can now monitor and maintain their trailers remotely, solving problems in real-time and preventing costly downtime. “It’s a game-changer for our clients,” Jesse says. “They don’t have to wait for someone to drive out to fix an issue anymore. Everything is visible in real time, so they can address problems right away.” Final thoughts Reflecting on the experience, Jesse credits much of their success to Victron’s open, customisable platform and the support provided by its technical team. His advice for those considering similar solutions includes: Invest in high-quality components to ensure reliability. Tropik Elec’s cyclone-ready ESS management
Every project comes with its own set of challenges, and having the right tools and support can make all the difference. That’s why we’ve been focusing on making our products customisable and adaptable to various needs. To help installers handle specific challenges, we’ve created the Software Integrator Program. This program links you with experienced software integrators who can create solutions tailored to you, making it easier to get the most out of your Victron system. One of our long-time partners, Tropik Elec, from the island of La Réunion, recently used the Software Integrator Program to solve a major problem they were facing. In this blog, we will take a look at how they did it and how the program could help you too! The challenge: ESS management during cyclone season Tropik Elec, a Victron distributor for over eight years, has installed more than 600 ESS systems on the cyclone-prone island of La Réunion. The company’s Director, Guillaume Guinebaud, explained their challenge: “The ESS algorithm is great and works perfectly to optimise our solar production on a day-to-day basis, but it cannot account for something like a major storm or hurricane coming in.” Whenever a cyclone is forecasted, Guillaume must manually adjust the battery modes across all installations—a task that can take nearly an entire day. This process not only demands a significant amount of time but also adds stress during an already critical period. The solution: Software Integrator Program Tropik Elec needed a solution tailored to their unique challenge, so we connected Guillaume with one of our trusted software integrators, Thijs. Together, they developed a tool that simplified the process of preparing ESS installations for cyclones, where power outages are both common and prolonged. Guillaume explains: “At a glance, I can visualise the battery status of all my systems and change it all at once with a single click.” Implementation and collaboration The strength of the Software Integrator Program lies in its collaborative nature. The custom software is created through close communication between the customer and the software integrator. For Thijs and Guillaume, one key challenge was ensuring that each system’s battery mode could be accurately identified and reset after the storm. By using the tagging feature on the Victron Remote Management (VRM) portal, they categorised systems based on battery types and specific operational needs. Thanks to Thijs’s expertise and their strong collaboration, the tool was quickly developed and deployed, causing minimal disruption to Tropik Elec’s operations. Guillaume says, “It actually took me more time to tag all my installations than it did for Thijs to create the dashboard!” Security and user-friendliness Security was a top priority for Tropik Elec, and the custom tool is hosted on a secure server in Amsterdam. Only authorised personnel have access, giving installers peace of mind. The interface was also designed with simplicity in mind, making it intuitive and user-friendly, even for those who might use it infrequently. The outcome This custom solution has transformed the way Tropikelec manages ESS systems during cyclone season. Guillaume and his team now have confidence that their systems are prepared for the cyclone season. But let’s hear from Guillaume himself: “I am 100% satisfied and for a super reasonable cost. Victron offers so many possibilities with its products and the VRM portal that we’re always thinking of new features we’d love to have. With other brands, we’d just accept, ‘ This is what I get, and I have to deal with it.’ But with Victron and the Software Integrator Program, there’s no feature, need, wish, or request that can’t be done!” Endless possibilities No challenge is too unique or complex when you have the right tools. If you’re facing specific problems that standard solutions can’t solve, the Software Integrator Program could be the answer. With a tailored solution, you can improve efficiency, ensure system reliability, and deliver the best service to your customers.
